It signifies “the one who took a terrible oath.” Bhishma is remembered for his vow of lifelong celibacy, made to ensure his father could marry the woman he loved, securing the future lineage of the throne. The name embodies sacrifice, duty, selflessness, and unshakable resolve—values that continue to inspire across generations.
